JDL Says No to Violence Against Fellow Jews
|
Posted February 16, 2005
The Jewish Defense League exists to protect the Jewish people, along with their rights and property, in the Diaspora; the League promotes Jewish identity, education and self-preservation. In accordance with organizational policy, the Jewish Defense League never will involve itself in the internal politics of the Jewish state. This document has been prepared in order to ensure that there is no opportunity for misapprehension of the JDLs position on a matter of vital importance.
Today the Jews of Israel are at a crossroads. The choices made by their government will be felt for generations to come. But while we may have philosophical differences with the Israeli government regarding the status of Jewish lands that were liberated in 1967, we recognize that only Israels citizenry has the authority to terminate the plan through the democratic process. We are sickened to have heard reports that there are individuals within Jewish circles who will go to any length to prevent Ariel Sharons plans from coming to fruition. The Jewish Defense League, in the spirit of Ahavat Yisroel (the Love of the Jewish People), denounces in the strongest possible terms any threats or physical attacks upon Prime Minister Ariel Sharon or other members of Knesset. It is deplorable for any entity to plot to harm fellow Jews.
Ariel Sharon remains the greatest Israeli general of modern times. He saved Israel repeatedly throughout the countrys existence. Regardless of the merit of Sharons decisions on the matter of disengagement, he is the democratically elected prime minister. If Israelis think that their interests would be better served by different leadership, it incumbent upon them to elect other leaders.
The government of Israel has the responsibility to protect every Jew in Israel and to not unjustly harm any Jew under any circumstances. The pain of one Jew is the pain of all Jews and should be felt by each and every one of us. If Israelis believe their nations current course is misguided, we have faith that they will democratically chart an alternative route. We pray to G-d to watch over us, guide and inspire our leaders, and ensure the safety of the Jewish people in Israel and in the Diaspora, according to His divine plan.
