Molotov Cocktail Thrown Into the Home of a Rabbi

“Noise and a flash of light woke the rabbi before dawn on Wednesday, and when he looked down, his bed was on fire. The rabbi, Nosson Schuman, was able to put out the fire, which the authorities said was caused by a Molotov cocktail that crashed through a second-story window of the Victorian home where the rabbi and his family live, in Rutherford, N.J.

The Schumans live above Congregation Beth El, where just over a dozen families meet to pray. The rabbi suffered minor burns extinguishing the fire, said the synagogue’s president, Larry Goldberg, who relayed the account that the rabbi had given him.

Investigators found evidence that a total of five Molotov cocktails had been hurled in the attack, about 4:30 a.m. It was the second case of arson involving a synagogue in Bergen County, N.J., since the year began, said Michael B. Ward, the special agent in charge of the Newark office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.“ Continue reading.

Jewish girl threatened at school

The family of a 14-year-old girl has sued school officials in Green, alleging they failed to stop physical and emotional bullying aimed at their daughter in part because she is Jewish. The parents sued in U.S. District Court after withdrawing their daughter from Green High School last month because, according to the lawsuit, officials did nothing to stop the taunting, violence and threats of violence. The name of the family is being withheld to protect the identity of the girl.

The lawsuit claims the bullying by classmates went on for years. Students told her she would “rot in hell” because she didn’t believe in Jesus Christ and they called her a “dirty Jew.”
