Armchair Activist: Don't Let Muslims Control Disney's Israel Exhibit

(From site archives)

A Muslim group in the United States is trying to bully the Disney Company into giving them control over an exhibit on Israel for the Epcot Center's millennium celebration. We must tell the company that it must not give in to threats from these bullies.

The American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ) received a reply (see their letter below) from the Walt Disney Co. explicitly saying that the Israel exhibit is apolitical and NOT titled "Jerusalem, the Capital of Israel." The Muslims, however, are not giving up their demand to inspect the exhibit prior to the opening in order to search for any subtle political aspects (meaning anything pro-Israel).

Please contact Walt Disney officials and express your opinion. Use words like: "inspection,""censorship," "investigation," "examination," "scrutinize" and "analyze" in protesting what the AMJ wants to do to the exhibit.

Be sure to stress these points:

*Walt Disney Company should not permit a pre-opening inspection;

*The organizations requesting the inspection are totally political;

*American Arab Islamic organizations repeatedly take positions against the exercise of free speech and free enterprise (such as Days Inn and Burger King);

*History and current events cannot be restricted or redefined to accommodate Arab/Islamic views.

<<American Muslims for Jerusalem Disney Campaign - Action Needed

The American Committee on Jerusalem (ACJ) and American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ) have formed a coalition of 14 Arab-American and Muslim-American organizations to protest the "Jerusalem, Capital of Israel" theme of the Israeli exhibit at Diseny World's Epcot Center Millennium Exhibition, due to open on September 30, 1999.

In response to a letter from Disney assuring the coalition that the exhibit is "apolitical" and "is not titled Jerusalem, Capital of Israel", ACJ and AMJ have sent Disney a letter asking that their representatives review the exhibit for any overlooked or missed political references, prior to its opening.

Action needed: Please call and fax the individuals listed below supporting the ACJ and AMJ request to review the exhibit. Explain that the concern is that there are references in the exhibit that insinuate and imply that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
