Armchair Activist: Demolitions are Israel's Right

(From site archives)

The left-wing movement in Israel has announced an e-mail campaign to influence President Clinton to put pressure on Israel to change its policy of destroying illegal buildings in Jerusalem and Yesha. You are asked to counter their deceit by e-mailing the President and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright with your own message. Feel free to edit the letter that appears below as you see fit and send it to the following addresses to counteract the original campaign. And please circulate this appeal to all those people who believe in Israel's right to sovereignty.

Send your message to:

President of the United States Bill Clinton: president@whitehouse.gov

United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: secretary@state.gov

Send a copy of your message to:

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu: pm@pmo.gov.il

Here's a sample message:

Subject: Do not interfere with destroying illegal structures!

The so-called "demolition" of Palestinian homes by the Israeli authorities in the areas of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem is a policy based on the rights of a sovereign nation to enforce the laws of the land. It is the epitome of hypocrisy for a foreign country to interfere with due process of law and ignore the political background of the events in the Middle East.

I would like to note that:

* The Palestinians are using central budgets to support massive building projects in areas that have been specifically forbidden according to agreements which they signed, while at the same time objecting to projects of a sovereign government which are outside the scope of the same agreements.

* Any demolition has taken place only after lengthy court deliberations, where the illegal character of these building operations has been clearly established. And even so, the actual process lags far behind the number of illegal structures, evidently in an effort not to provide undue hardship on the population, in spite of the clear legal basis for the proceedings.

I demand that you support Israel in its attempt to apply the rule of law equally to all its citizens and residents.

Respectfully,

<Your Name Here>
