Action: An Abomination in Paradise -- Part 3

By Bill Maniaci

The following morning brought fruition to our efforts. Irv's eloquence on the radio and on the streets had a powerful effect. He had touched the heart and soul of the people of Kootenai County, Spokane, and Coeur d'Alene itself. We arrived at our designated spot on the parade route at 9 a.m. We could see the racists gathering in their area across the street. At first, we were the only persons there, where the anti-nazi, anti-KKK, anti-hate, and anti-intolerance individuals were to gather. But soon, more and more individuals began to arrive.

Many approached Irv to shake his hand, to thank him for being there and to offer words of encouragement. I was approached by an elderly Jewish lady who was in her middle 70s. Her gray hair was drawn back in a pony tail, and she had a glowing look of determination on her face. Her eyes were sad when she came to me and thanked me for being there and trying to make people understand. She was holding a poster she had made by hand. On that poster was a yellow Star of David and beneath the star, drawn with a crayon, were the words "NEVER AGAIN." My eyes were blurred with emotion. I will never forget her.

The anti-nazi protesters swelled to over a thousand before the evil parade began at ten o'clock. As Butler and his degenerates passed down the streets of Coeur d'Alene, the shouts of hundreds of decent people drowned out his feeble attempt to preach his hatred. When the parade was over, some of the nazis tried to leave the area by taking a back street. They were spotted by the crowd. The riot-helmeted police prevented the nazis from being harmed, and some of the protesters were arrested. The police did their jobs, maintained order, and prevented injuries. Unfortunately, some bystanders were struck with batons, but, none of the hate mongers were injured. Irv led the chanting against the nazis as they fled Coeur d'Alene. It's over, the parade, that is, for this year.

A clear message was sent to Butler and his henchmen this time, but, have no doubt. They will be back. Our job is not over. The JDL will continue to openly oppose hatred wherever it is, with whatever means necessary. Take heed, nazis, we're watching you.
