A Jewish leader from Evansville, Ind., plans a counterattack against one of the country's foremost white supremacists. It all relates to a confrontation last Friday at Northwestern University when the founder of the World Church of the Creator tried to recruit for his hate group, and ended up clashing with the Jewish Defense League.
JDL member Jonathon Epstein of Evansville prefers a low profile, but he says Hale's worldwide publicity in Spin Magazine this month forced a response. "Our presence in Evanston, Illinois, last week was essentially about letting Mr. Hale know we were there, and letting him know we're holding him personally accountable for the behavior of members of his church." Members like Benjamin Smith, the man who killed two people, and eventually himself in a shooting spree in Chicago last July. Epstein says he just cannot sit by and do nothing while Hale spreads his message of hate. "Not doing anything and waiting for something to happen is how we ended up with six million people dead in Germany 60 years ago. It's not going to happen again."
The JDL may take legal action against Hale this week, but Epstein won't say what that might be. Epstein says he believes in Hale's right to speak his beliefs, but he's also pledged to muffle Hale's voice in public.
